Our History
A Landscape With Deep Roots

Some places hold a feeling the moment you arrive. The Bird Ranch at San Luis Creek is one of them! A historic ranch estate in Central California where more than a century of care has preserved something increasingly rare: a working landscape where water, history, and wildlife still move together. Today it's a wedding and event venue, but its story began long before the first vows were spoken here.

A Creek That Drew People for Centuries
Long before European settlement, the Yokuts and Matsun people lived along the banks of San Luis Creek, sustained by its seasonal waters, wetlands, and abundant birdlife. In a dry, open plain, the creek was a gathering place and a life-giving pathway, supporting generations of Indigenous stewardship.

In September 1806, Spanish explorer Ensign Gabriel Moraga followed the same waterway into what is now Merced County. Early accounts describe how the relief of finding fresh water moved him to name the nearby river La Merced — "mercy" or "grace" — a name the county itself would later carry. It was one of the earliest recorded European passages through the region, with San Luis Creek at its heart.

From Danish Dairy Farm to Wedding Destination
In the 1800s, the land belonged to influential Westside entrepreneur Simon Newman before passing to Clarence Petersen. In the early 1900s, the Petersen family, Danish farmers, built the ranch structures that still stand today, raising chickens and running a dairy. Their heritage shows in the architecture's craftsmanship, simplicity, and durability; the very buildings couples now gather among to celebrate.

In 1997, stewardship passed to the Areias family, who remain its caretakers today. They've carefully restored the historic buildings while breathing new life into the land, shaping the ranch into the historic wedding and event venue it is now, without ever losing the soul of what came before.

A Living Sanctuary
Before modern agriculture transformed the valley, vast grasslands, riparian woodlands, and marshes supported millions of waterfowl and shorebirds, as well as elk, antelope, and deer. Through dams, canals, and land leveling, including the San Luis Dam in 1962, much of the region was reshaped; this stretch of San Luis Creek endures. Fed today by backwater from the Main Canal, it remains a vital nesting habitat for great blue herons, egrets, and other birds.

More than 100 mature cottonwoods still canopy this final tree-line, the last stretch of the San Luis Creek, a rare refuge in an altered Central Valley landscape. The corridor shelters Central California's largest Great Blue Heron rookeries, along with many native and migratory species, including wintering and migratory Bald Eagles.

Our stewardship here is active and ongoing. Through wetland restoration and a dedicated Monarch butterfly sanctuary, we've reintroduced native milkweed and pollinator plants to support Monarchs and other pollinators through the most fragile stages of their lives. A protected landscape woven quietly into daily life at the ranch, tended with patience and restraint. That work was featured in the PBS short documentary Growing Forward | The Big Tell, exploring how working agricultural land can also nurture wildlife and healthy ecosystems.
